Summary/Abstract: Prague at the time of the baroque and in the immediately following period defined roughlythe years of 1650–1800, underwent fundamental changes not only due to the appearance ofa number of high-quality buildings, especially after 1690, but also within the framework ofurbanism. The way the area was used and the level of the height of the housing developmentchanged, and the immediate surroundings of the city underwent a transformation. The „image“of Prague‘s historical districts as a fundamentally baroque city has imprinted itself on the generalconsciousness on the one hand; on the other hand, this „image“ is misleading in many regards.Using the examples of the objects of a spinning mill and a penitentiary in Prague‘s Old Town,an interesting transformation of the city landscape into such a small area of present-day JanPalach Square can be traced on the basis of preserved archival sources, especially cartographicdocuments, iconography, as well as files. In the past, this area was not one of the representativeparts of the Prague metropolis, but in the following centuries it gained a significant positionwithin our capital.
