Summary/Abstract: Presence is a concretized form of existence of some being. An entity is present to another conscious entity if it is close to it, within the range of its senses. Such presence is called physical presence. At the other extreme there is spiritual pre-sence. Being which is present in a spiritual way is not experienced through the senses, but through the act of thinking. Between physical and spiritual presence there are other kinds of presence: virtual (mediated by image, photo, telephone call, video call), symbolic (an entity is present through signs and symbols) and sacramental. The sacramental presence combines physical presence with spiritual presence, using symbolic and virtual presence. The best expression of sacramental presence is the presence of Christ in the Eucharist – it is the presence of presences.
