Summary/Abstract: The article demonstrates the existence of a natural connection between the priesthood and man’s hope for salvation, which became possible thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. It is natural because it is in human nature to consciously and voluntarily devote oneself (heroism) to values of one’s own choos-ing (homo capax sacerdotii). On this basis, we can speak of a natural priesthood and of man as an “»un-aware« priest” (C.K. Norwid [poet]). Pope John Paul II highlighted the connection between priesthood and hope. This connection con-sists in the priesthood’s service to hope, which is expressed and simultaneously strengthened by total dedication to God, which constitutes the fundamental act of priesthood. Other priestly functions (teaching and leadership) define the object of hope and ensure its attainment. This service was exemplified in Christ, the su-preme and eternal priest.
