Summary/Abstract: This article presents a scholarly edition of the foundation charter of Sztum (Ger. Stuhm),dated 23 September 1416, preserved in the State Archives in Gdańsk (Ger. Danzig). Despiteits historical significance, this original source has not been utilised in previous historiographyof Sztum or in broader studies on the history of Prussian towns during the Middle Ages andearly modern period. Instead, researchers have relied exclusively on eighteenth-century cop-ies. The first part of the article examines how the charter has been used in historiography sincethe second half of the nineteenth century, discusses the history of the Sztum archives from theeighteenth to the twentieth century, and reviews the surviving eighteenth-century copies of thecharter housed in the State Archives in Gdańsk. The second part provides an analysis of the con-tent of the original document and outlines the methodology used to produce a map of Sztum, including a hypothetical reconstruction of the town’s landed estates (municipal patrimony). Thethird part offers a description of the document’s physical characteristics and explains the edito-rial principles applied in the publication of the charter’s text, which is included as a source edi-tion in the appendix.
