Summary/Abstract: This study examines the definition of the body, the female body, the intersection of theatre and body theories in Lucy Kirkwood's play It Felt Empty When the Heart Went at First but It is Alright Now (2009). The play depicts the two women who come to London from Eastern Europe and West Africa with great hopes through human trafficking. It highlights how they are abandoned, how the abused women sacrifice their bodies in the sex trade in order to continue their lives, and how they are enslaved. Kirkwood's play portrays women who have no voice or rights. Dijana is deceived by Babac, whom she trusts and loves, and her body is always exploited, marginalised and defined by others. The other heroine, Gloria from Nigeria, comes to London to earn money through human trafficking and to send money to her family in her country. However, Gloria, whose passport is grabbed away from her and forced labour is started, ends up in jail. Focusing on the discourse of women and the body in the historical process and how women who struggle with economic conditions and strive to gain their freedom are used as modern slaves, this study tries to analyse Lucy Kirkwood's play through the body theories, definitions and discourses of diverse thinkers and authors.
