Summary/Abstract: Until 2010, a very small number of people became musicologists, based on their interest, passing a number of difficult specialized exams, and completing the appropriate training in a wide range of areas that determine professionalism in music and musicology. After 2010, under the force of the changed law, anyone who wants to find a job as a lecturer in a higher education institution or institute, and to remain on it, must defend a dissertation. In other words, in the field of music, a „musicologist“ must appear, but often without the appropriate training and sometimes even without a general understanding of what science and dissertation is and how to write it. For this reason, I was invited to take over the teaching for doctoral students at the Academy of Music, Dance and Visual Arts „Professor Assen Diamandiev“ in Plovdiv, which I have been leading to this day. To this end, I have thought through and thematically arranged the most important questions and related problems that doctoral students should be aware of. Over the past years, the thematics has been finalized in the course of my meetings with the students. I also share some of my accumulated experience in this teaching and in my work as editor of the Proceedings of this conference.
