Summary/Abstract: This study analyses the use of the expression “sivá/šedá zóna” (‘grey zone’) in Slovak journalism and the Slovak National Corpus. It compares the variants “sivá zóna” and “šedá zóna” in terms of frequency, linguistic normativity and contextual usage. Despite recommendations to use “sivý” as the standard adjective, the form “šedá zóna” predominates in online environments. Both variants appear with similar frequency in journalistic texts, while the normative “sivá zóna” is more common in academic writing. The term most often appears in relation to politics, law, war, economics and the media, and typically carries negative connotations such as uncertainty, illegality or a lack of regulation. Historically, positive interpretations (e.g. in Jiřina Šiklová’s essay) have given way to the contemporary view of the grey zone as an ambiguous, problematic space outside clear rules.
