Summary/Abstract: This study examines the development and position of national, Romanian-language operetta in the context of the socialist cultural policy in the Romania of the 1950s and 1960s, based on the 1962 staging of Gherase Dendrino’s operetta Lysistraté (Lysistrata) directed by János Taub at the Hungarian State Opera in Cluj-Napoca. The analysis focuses on the background to the staging of the musical play, which can be interpreted as a representation of the ideological discourse of the struggle for peace, and on a historical overview of Romanian national operetta literature prior to that, as well as on the reasons for the rise of the genre in Cluj-Napoca.
