Summary/Abstract: The Early Eneolithic sanctuary of St. Athanasius, located near the village of Spanchevo, implies an unambiguous correlation between the selection of its site and the accessibility of natural resources within the surrounding environment. The primary determinant for the establishment of this sanctuary was the abundance of surface deposits of raw materials in the area. This paper hypothesizes that the resources-to-spatial selection connection is implied through the selection of raw materials in the techno logical process and in the manufacturing of the discovered figurines and the numerous portable artifacts. Accordingly, this paper will focus on identifying local sources of mineral resources and exploring their connection to the sanctuary.
