Summary/Abstract: The question of why and how the North Atlantic Treaty Organization came to be is of fundamental importance to both historians and scholars of international relations. Its answer to a large extent determines the reasons for the existence of the Alliance. In search of the prerequisites for the emergence of a political-military union, the environment that creates the conditions for its creation must be examined firstly. This effort inevitably brings us back to the end of the Second World War, its results, the agreements between the victorious countries, the agreements made with the defeated and, above all, the controversies surrounding the fate of Germany. We will approach these processes more politically, in order to look for the logic and chronology in the coming rivalry, which divides Europe and the world into two blocs.
