Summary/Abstract: Slavko Šećerov was a Serbian economist, biologist, politician and public servant. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Vienna in 1910, and in 1913 he was appointed as a substitute teacher at the Fourth Belgrade Gymnasium. The war found him in his hometown, where he was interned and later sent to the Eastern Front. There he surrendered to the Russians with a group of Serbs from Banat. They were sent to Serbia, where he obtained Serbian citizenship and joined the Serbian army. Together with the army, he crossed Albania, and was then sent by the Serbian government—first to Geneva and later to London—to accompany Serbian students to England. From 1916 to 1918 he lived in London, where he worked and earned a degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. The thesis he defended was titled Economic Phenomena Before and After War, and it was printed in London in Macmillan’s prestigious economic edition in 1919. Such recognition established him as a master of economic and political sciences and a prominent macroeconomist. After the Great War, Šećerov actively participated in the political and economic life of Serbia, first as a member of parliament and a prominent member of the Democratic Party, a commissioner for agrarian reform, and later as a public intellectual and economic adviser. He drafted several national budget projects and represented the Yugoslav parliament at numerous international conferences and institutions. Through his theoretical work in macroeconomics, finance and monetary theory, he made an immeasurable contribution to Serbian economic thought. After his political career ended in 1935, Šećerov lived a private life in Belgrade, largely forgotten by both the academic and political communities. In this quiet period he wrote several exceptional works that await to be published, most notably his Autobiography and History of Agrarian Reform.
