Summary/Abstract: The largely forgotten Vienna-based writer Hilda Bergmann was known as an author of Christian mythically charged nature and “Heimat” (homeland) poetry as well as children’s stories and fairy tales in the 1920s and 1930s. While she initially benefited from the rise of National Socialism, she was forced to flee to Sweden with her Jewish husband after the annexation of Austria. This article explores the tension between ideological entanglement and anti-Semitic persecution in her life and work.
