Summary/Abstract: Balak Dere is located 30 km west of the town of Odrin above the river Arda. Regular archaeological excavations have so far established the main periods of occupation, covering the period from the 3rd to the 13th centuries. The fortress flourished in the 6th century until the early 7th century when it was destroyed by the last Slavic-Avar invasions. In the period up to the 10th century, no life was recorded on the site, when a Bulgarian garrison was probably stationed there, its functions being associated with the wars of Tsar Simeon (893- 927) in Thrace. Several groups of artefacts have been found from this era – foundations of a yurt-like dwelling, belt appliqués, a lead amulet with Cyrillic text, bells and coins. Their discovery at the fortress proves not only the presence of the Bulgarians in the 10th century, but also the way in which the Bulgarian army acted in this military campaign against Byzantium, and in fact the finds from the 10th century materialize the sources that give information about the actions of Tsar Simeon in the newly conquered territories of Thrace.
