HEATING FACILITIES IN EXTRA-CITY RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURES IN NORTHEASTERN BULGARIA (VIII – BEGINNING OF THE 11TH CENTURY)

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this report is to compile and present, as far as possible, the domestic heating systems found in the earthworks and fortified settlements, as well as in unfortified settlements dating from the First Bulgarian Empire, that have been excavated in northeastern Bulgaria. The study focuses on the most common and widespread dwelling types for the period from the 8th to the 11th centuries, such as the half-buried earth hut and the shallow-buried above-ground dwelling. The work also includes the majority of settlements discovered during infrastructure projects related to the construction of the Hemus highway and the laying of the cross-border gas pipeline.
