Summary/Abstract: Charles De Coster’s La Légende d’Ulenspiegel was deemed by Young Belgians a national epic. The novel has been translated into many languages, including Polish. The first Polish translation was published in 1914. The article aims to present how Przecław Smolik, the Polish translator of the novel, translated cultural references to Belgium and particularly to Flanders. The research concerns the strategies and techniques adopted for translating cultural references and Dutch loanwords, but also para-texts such as footnotes and the preface. The analysis reveals the omission of several chapters in the Polish translation and the non-preservation of certain Dutch loanwords in the translated text. However, the historical context of the novel has been well described in the preface.
