Summary/Abstract: The article examines transformations in the vocabulary of the Bulgarian language in the middle of 19th century – times of busy cultural and linguistic changes. The international and the local news on the pages of Tsarigradski vestnic in the period between 1848 and 1962 are analyzed because they reflect these changes in a clear way. Attention is also paid to the educational and entertainment texts, published mainly during the Crimean War of 1853–1856. The work presents the research of the author on the lexical content of the articles and reports. Respectively, the changes in this content and the tendencies of europeanization, archaization and folklorization of the written language, still in a process of formation are revealed. These three processes go on together in the dynamic sociocultural context of the nation building period and their reflection on the pages of the newspaper under study is an important source of information for the cultural interconnections in the middle of 19th century. The article thus touches the key entanglement of language, culture and periodicals in this period as well as the changes which took place as a result of them.
