Summary/Abstract: The study traces the process of establishing Catalan autonomy in the period 1930 – 1032. The Pact of San Sebastian (August 1930) created the conditions for Catalonia to obtain autonomy with in the future Spanish Republic. As early as April 14, 1931, with the proclamation of the Republic, the Catalan leaders act edforcefully and even declared independence. This is a significant reason for conflict between Madrid and Barcelona in the next year and a half periods of conflict and understanding follow. In September 1932 Catalonia gets autonomy; with this the conflict appears to have been quelled, butself-governance is far more limited than desired, and this will create new occasions for misunderstanding in the years to come.
