Summary/Abstract: Over the past ten to fifteen years, in Bulgaria, along with the ongoing trend of migration from the countryside to the city, clearly marked opposite movements have also been observed. Part of this trend of settlement in Bulgarian villages is the international counterurbanization, to which the interest of the study is directed. In it, international counterurbanization is understood as a movement downwards the settlement hierarchy or as downward migration. At the same time, in terms of motivation, understandings and expectations for the life of the settlers, as well as with an eye on the specifics of the foreign migrants who are the subject of the study, international counterurbanization is viewed as a lifestyle migration of people who have retired from work. The study aims to present the motives for the resettlement of a certain group of foreign lifestyle migrants in Southwest Bulgaria (the region of Petrich and Sandanski), calling themselves the Friday Group/Friday Club, and for choosing the Bulgarian rural environment; the specifics of the new lifestyle they strive for; their socio-cultural adaptation and integration; the forms of interaction with the receiving and sending socio-cultural environments. The study is part of the project “The Neighbour from Sofia, the New Villager from Germany: Counterurbanisation, Socio-Cultural Interactions and Local Transformations”, supported by the National Science Fund of Bulgaria (Contract No. КП-06-Н70/10).
