Summary/Abstract: In the first half of the 19th century tollhouses, that is posts of customs control guard, were a distinctive type of building in Classicist architecture in the Polish lands. These small buildings functioned throughout Europe at the time; in Poland they were built in larger cities. These characteristically shaped masonry buildings were an expression of the unification of functional and formal solutions applied in the construction of public utility buildings in the Kingdom of Poland. Particularly distinctive, and the most imposing, were the Warsaw tollhouses, designed by Jakub Kubicki, one of the most eminent architects of Classicism in Poland. Traces of their influence can be found in other buildings of this kind in the Polish lands, including the particularly interesting tollhouses in Cracow, then a Free City.
