Summary/Abstract: The various ornate university insignia and regalia – sceptres, chains, rings, seals, gowns, etc. – have represented the special status, privileges and autonomy of universities and the community since the Middle Ages. Their use was often associated with a ceremonial event. The insignia of the Elisabeth University were created in the early to mid 1920s, and in addition to the traditional, easily recognisable symbols of the academic field and individual disciplines, national (Hungarian) and local (Bratislava and Pécs) symbols made them unique. Their forms were determined not only by the institution’s financial resources, but also by the importance that members of the community attached to the university’s identity constructions. Therefore, the choice of colours, patterns, decorations, etc. was not without conflict.
