Summary/Abstract: This study focusses on the manner in which the history of Carpatho-Rus’ and Carpatho-Rusyns has been written since the late eighteenth century. The author discusses several myths and stereotypes that still predominate in the existing historic literature. Following a discussion of three types of myths, the study looks at specific examples from the medieval period (Marchia Ruthenorum, Cyril and Methodian mission) and from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (alleged Hungarian political and economic oppression, Carpatho-Ukraine, Soviet “re-unification”) to show how myths and stereotypes still exist in much Carpatho-Rusyn historiography.
