Summary/Abstract: Eparchial library (1819) of Prešov bishopric possesses a wide-range book fond. It mainly reflects the ideas of its founders, the first bishop in Prešov, Grigorij Tarkovič and Hungarian philantrope, Ján-Baptista Kováč. The bishop intented to increase the level of clergy by which they would also gain a better social and economical position, which would be related to a general overview knowledge and he meant to achieve it through books. His gift of books had mostly theological character. Ján-Baptista Kováč presents in his deed of covenant that he wishes the library to be open to students and the residents of the town. The gift of books of the Hungarian philantrope has humane character, as well as maps. The main language of the gift is Hungarian. Gradually, other donators from the surrounding area followed his example. The book assets of priests who had passed away also became a part of the book fond. Eventually, the library became a closed institution.
