Summary/Abstract: While watching Hungarian television channels, I observed that the verb “tud” (Hungarian for “to know”, “to be able to”) appears with conspicuous frequency in speakers’ utterances. Although this in itself would not necessarily constitute a linguistic or grammatical error, it does become problematic when, due to the semantic content of the verb “tud”, it either does not align with the intended meaning of the utterance or is entirely superfluous from a communicative standpoint. – Given that “tud” is not a filler word and cannot function as such in any form of discourse, its recurrent appearance can only be attributed to a prevailing linguistic trend. It is, therefore, to be classified as a vogue word, and should be regarded and treated as such.
