Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the situation related to the outcoms of the jers’ loss and the reflection of this phonetic phenomenon in the graphics of the oldest Ruthenian secular texts that date from the 16th-18th centuries, i.e. from the time when the process the jers’ loss had already taken place. The performed analysis of the texts testifies to two opposing trends. On the one hand, the phonetic system of the scribes changed considerably in the 16th–18th centuries, while there was no single graphic tradition that would correspond to the real synchronous phonetic situation. On the other hand, the idea of such a standard existed and was connected with the graphics of church texts, therefore many scribes demostrate an effort to improve the text, among other things, by using jers, so that the certain scribes could form their own graphic systems of jers’ usage (often without any real phonetic meaning).
