Summary/Abstract: This paper features the evolution of such a field as English for Specific Purposes covering a period of time of almost over fifty years: from the 1960s – as its origins, through 1974 as its consolidation as a distinct discipline – and up to present times, highlighting its continuous development.ore precisely, this paper analyzes the factors that led to the ESP emergence, the diversification of its subfields (EAP, English for Academic Purposes; EOP, English for Academic Purposes; EST, English for Science and Technology, etc.), the integration of digital technologies and adjustment to global and intercultural trends and requirements. It includes a timeline of the key stages in ESP underpinned by the fundamental principles articulated by its “founding fathers”. In particular, the period of time from 2015 to 2025 is dwelled upon in the context of ESP advancement and the switch of its research focus towards practical applications, intercultural competences, and digitalization.
