Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyse the decline of the Gagauz language in the Gagauz autonomous region, located in the southern part of the Republic of Moldova. The theoretical section focuses on a presentation of this ethnic group, as well as on the manner in which the Gagauz have managed to preserve their traditions and language during the Soviet regime. According to UNESCO, in 2010, the Gagauz language was classified as potentially vulnerable, as a result of intense Russian propaganda. The study also aims to look at political and sociocultural relations between Chișinău and Comrat, the capital of the autonomous region. Furthermore, our goal is to observe the influence of Russian politics in the region managed by Evghenia Guțul, the current leader of the territorial unit. The written press and local television programmes play a major role in the preservation of the Gagauz language. The research emphasizes the contents of the main Gagauz newspapers and magazines and their approach to presenting information. A practical part will focus on the number of Gagauz language classes taught in schools during the period 1962 up to the present in order to gauge the increase or decrease in their number and explain the causes thereof.
