Summary/Abstract: This review of the collective volume Infernul cotidian. Imaginarul bolii în literatura română [The Ordeal of Daily Life. The Imaginary of Illness in Romanian Literature], coordinated by Emanuela Ilie, has enabled the assumption of multiple perspectives on this complex theme. The analysis explores the imaginary of illness in Romanian literature, emphasizing the nuanced and rigorous ways in which bodily and nervous diseases are represented across a wide spectrum of texts. By addressing both canonical and lesser–known works, the review highlights the diversity of literary perspectives through which illness is portrayed – not merely as a medical or physical condition, but also as a metaphorical and cultural construct. Special attention is given to the rigorous representation of corpor(e)al fragility, the depiction of nervous disorders, and the symbolic functions they acquire within different narrative contexts. Ultimately, the volume demonstrates how the literary imaginary of illness functions as a multifaceted mirror of individual and collective experiences, opening interdisciplinary avenues between literature, cultural studies, and medical humanities.
