Summary/Abstract: Competitions for students of the School of Fine Arts in Kraków werean important element of the teaching process in the years 1873–1893.Prizes were awarded for drawings and paintings made from an antiquecast and model, an academic nude from a male model, a sculptural workand a drawing task from perspective. Distinguished students receivedcash prizes funded by the Society of Friends of Fine Arts in Kraków. Stu-dents from the composition department led by Jan Matejko were honoredwith medals. Award-winning works were shown at an exhibition at theend of the school year. A fixed schedule of competitions was develo-ped, which motivated students to work and prepared them to participatein art exhibitions. Among those entering the competition were studentswho became outstanding artists after completing their education. Theyincluded: Stanisław Wyspiański, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Mehoffer, Al-fred Daun, Wincenty Wodzinowski, Włodzimierz Tetmajer. The issuesdiscussed in the article concern: the rules of organized competitions, thetopics of the competitions, awarded students, the didactic process at theSchool of Fine Arts and the role of the teaching staff in artistic education.
