Summary/Abstract: Father Jan Długosz, known as the most outstanding historiographer of medievalPoland, is rarely perceived as a cleric. However, many of his actions were inspired by the factthat he was a cleric. Tracing his path to priesthood and subsequent stages of life up to theroyal nomination to the Lviv archbishopric was the aim of this article. The Polish Liwiusz isan example of a medieval cleric who lived to see the highest church dignities. Slowly, with thepassage of time, he accepted individual degrees of ordination, which opened the way for himto various benefices, dignities and church offices. Thanks to his own abilities and protection,he received benefices from which he derived numerous incomes. He allocated a significantpart of them to purposes that today we would describe as charitable activities, charity andpatronage.
