Pseudo-Athanasius in the Newly Redacted Menaion Homiliaries: Greek Sources and Old Russian Reception

Summary/Abstract: This article investigates a group of pseudo-Athanasian homilies found in the so-called “newly redacted” Menaion homiliaries compiled by Bulgarian scribes on Mount Athos in the fourteenth century. Although falsely attributed to Athanasius of Alexandria, these homilies played a significant role in shaping the liturgical and rhetorical culture of the South Slavic Orthodox tradition. The study analyzes five such homilies, focusing on their content and recurring rhetorical devices. It also traces their transmission from Greek sources to Slavic miscellanies, with particular attention to their stable inclusion in festal cycles. The authors explore the limited reception of these texts in the Russian manuscript tradition and contrast it with their deliberate inclusion in Bulgarian homiliaries, whose composition was likely motivated by the “syncretic” veneration of saints bearing the same name. The findings support the hypothesis that these homiliaries were shaped within the monastic context of the Lavra of St. Athanasius on Mount Athos.
