An Additional Argument Supporting the Preslav Origin of the Complete Old Church Slavonic Translation of John Chrysostom’s On the Statues

Summary/Abstract: The collection of John Chrysostom’s homilies On the Statues (Andrianty) has been known to the Slavic peoples since the earliest period of their literary history. However, the oldest extant witnesses are fragmentary and were often included in various anthologies, such as the Izbornik of 1076 and others. Complete translations of the collection are preserved only in much later copies – translation P in Russian manuscripts from the 16th–17th centuries, and the Athonite translation A in South Slavic copies from the 15th–16th centuries. This article presents the available evidence that Andrianty was widely known among the South Slavs and reviews previous research attributing translation P to the Preslav literary circle. In support of this attribution, it argues that a short excerpt included in a compilation within the Zlatostruy collection was taken specifically from the complete translation P of Andrianty. Both the fragment and the full translation use the distinctive word “skomrashina” (‘masquerade, pretence’) as a counterpart to the Greek προσωπεῖον (‘mask’). Finally, based on the presented data, the article proposes that translation P dates from between 900 and 927.
