The Homilies of Constantine of Preslav in a Comparative Context

Summary/Abstract: The article explores some specific aspects of the translation practice of Constantine of Preslav in two of his works – namely, The Didactic Gospel and The Orationes contra Arianos by Athanasius of Alexandria, which appeared almost simultaneously with the same purpose of preserving the right faith but employing different linguistic means of expression to achieve it. Through a comparative perspective the exploration comments on the reasons behind the different translation strategies and techniques such as: expression by linguistic means of the binary opposition divine vs. non-divine in The Orationes contra Arianos, following the Greek original; idiosyncratic thematic, genre, and stylistic features of each of the two homiletic sets; connections with the early Cyrillo-Methodian literary practice; differences in approaching the audience and the way the homilies are perceived; influence of the social environment, etc. The comparative study of The Didactic Gospel and The Orationes contra Arianos reveals the rapid evolution of Constantine of Preslav as a man of letters, who started as a presbyter and became a bishop, while turning into a high-caliber translator in a short period of time.
