Summary/Abstract: An international conference of this name took place in Freiburg on 3–5 November 2005. It was organized by the History Seminar of the Department of East and South-east Europe at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, together with the History Seminar of the Department of Recent and East European History, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Freiburg. The author reports on the remarkable papers given at the conference, which she considers to have been a highly successful contribution to our knowledge of the present and past of societies east of the former “Iron Curtain,” using the methods of oral history.
