„Święta góra” – ale czyja? Rowokół w polskiej publicystyce i nauce po 1945 roku
“Holy mountain” – but whose mountain? Rowokol (Rowokół) in Polish journalism and science after 1945

Summary/Abstract: After the end of the Second World War, publicists began to familiarise Poles with the history of the territories annexed to Poland. This also applied to the Smoldzino (Smołdzino) area, with Rowokol (Rowokół) Hill as a characteristic point of the landscape. Referring to the works of pre-war researchers, mainly ethnographers, and drawing on legends and undocumented news, they consolidated the image of the hill as a place of worship of Slavic gods. Despite the fact that neither archaeological research undertaken by Polish scientists, nor source queries in the following decades confirmed such a function of Rowokol (Rowokół), these theses remain in general circulation until today and are still presented as certainties. They also arouse more interest today than the documented existence of a Christian shrine in the 14th–16th centuries. The aim of this article is to show the divergence between the science and the journalistic message that has emerged in the following decades.
