Summary/Abstract: In the trilemma of law–legitimacy–morality regarding war and warfare operations, the concept of responsible war could find its own place. The operational definition of such a concept, or even behavior, lies somewhere between legitimate and moral aspects, since the ethical component is inherent in the idea of responsible war—not only the legitimate recourse to force and the use of military power or the associated legal dimension. In this article, we aim to identify concrete examples of wartime behavior that could support this concept and provide a foundation for responsible conduct during military operations. Our main test case is the recent U.S. attack on Iranian nuclear facilities and the Ayatollahs’ regime’s response, which was proportional and sought to avoid escalation of the conflict. The link between promoting responsible war and the effectiveness of achieving wartime objectives could nevertheless be instrumental both in contesting and in supporting any extension of such a practice.
