Summary/Abstract: Unlike speaking, reading is not a natural phenomenon, nor is it an innate quality of human beings and, as such, it is complex to learn. However, nowadays even more complex to understand and change is the low number of students who read. Under these circumstances, many questions are raised as to the causes of this phenomenon, and various discussions are held as to optimal ways to address it. The passage from the written word on paper to the word read on the screens of technological devices was expected to facilitate and intensify reading, making literature more easily available to more people. Nevertheless, it appears that the opposite is the case: the higher the access to technology, the less children seem likely to read. As a result, teaching literature has become increasingly challenging, resulting in less reading and lower linguistic and conceptual knowledge and awareness in general. At this point, blaming it on technology advances, disinterested students, untrained teachers or uninvolved parents is no longer enough. The ways of thinking about it and tackling it have to change, as does the approach to this problem, and appropriate measures must be taken to address it suitably. And, given that it is a new problem, new methods and solutions should be identified. These methods should be carefully thought through, properly funded, and consistently implemented in a committed fashion. It is a major multidimensional undertaking that requires the involvement of multiple actors and stakeholders. This analytical overview of the current situation seeks to put forth the main issues in teaching literature in schools and pave the way towards identifying effective methods of restoring awareness of the undeniable value of reading in general and literature in particular.
