Summary/Abstract: Throughout the twentieth century, the puppet underwent rapid development, and puppet theatre, which was a marginal art form at the beginning of the century, evolved into contemporary inno-vative stage forms. From puppet creatures resembling human beings and homogenous puppet theatre, the field has progressed to today’s object theatre aesthetic. All components of puppet performance have been changing - including the text and dramaturgy, imagery, puppets, actors, audience reception, as well as the processes of creating the performance, interaction between puppets and puppeteers and conventions between theatre and audience. The text examines the wide variety of artistic figures as part of specific cultural processes that generate dramatic pow-er in puppet performance. It includes examples from both global and Bulgarian theatre practices.
