Summary/Abstract: During the state-socialist period, the relationship between Hungary and Czechoslovakia was characterized by continuous tension and problems. Due to the Hungarian ethnic minority living in Czechoslovakia, cultural relations could not operate smoothly; in fact, it was precisely in these matters that the deep-seated conflict between the two supposedly internationalist countries came to the surface. In the 1970s, the activities and advocacy of the Hungarian intelligentsia in Czechoslovakia became more prominent. A part of this was a series of complaint letters sent to Hungarian state institutions in 1975. These letters presented a completely different picture of the fate of Hungarians there than what official reports contained or suggested. The detailed source materials that have been uncovered and compared highlight a sharp contrast between reality and the idealized diplomatic relations. Based on these sources, the period's problems—whether ideological or material disadvantages—can be understood in detail. It also reveals the ways and extent to which the Hungarian state wanted and was able to improve the cultural and educational provisions for the Hungarian community in Czechoslovakia.
