EVOLUTION OF THE THREE SEAS INITIATIVE IN THE CONTEXT OF CONTEMPORARY REGIONAL SECURITY CHALLENGES, GEOPOLITICS AND THE CONFLICT IN UKRAINE

Summary/Abstract: The Three Seas Initiative is a platform for regional cooperation that has beenin place since 2016. Despite its short history, it has already gone through sev-eral stages of development, from novelty, shaping of its identity, stagnation andrevival, related to events such as the creation of its Investment Fund, the im-plementation of the first projects, the pandemic, Russia’s attack on Ukraine, orthe expansion to include a new country, Greece, among others. External eventshave affected the Initiative and forced certain actions related to adapting to the­ changing international security environment. In contrast, the Initiative’s internaldecisions, related to its own objectives and the directions of its own develop-ment, were aimed at expanding the range of instruments for influencing statesand the security environment, strengthening the entity on the internationalstage and marking its sphere of influence. In addition to the Initiative’s constitu-ent states, states such as the US, China and Ukraine have influenced its evolu-tion. The aim of the article is to present the Initiative’s evolution and relevanceto regional security, geopolitics and the war in Ukraine.
