Summary/Abstract: The article suggests an attempt for comparative analysis of the forgotten/forbidden for more than seventy years Nikolai Rainov’s novel “Between the Desert and Life” and the worldly famous and even filmed novel of Nickos Kazandzakis “The Last Temptation of Christ”. Due to its brief content the present analysis does not comment all possible levels of two works, but concentrates mainly on paratexts and character system in the novels. On this background the author of the article observes the reflections and the transformations of input individualistic ideas. He examines attractions and repulsions not only between two novels, but also between them and the Old Testament – in that way the collision between the Orthodox religious thinking and the modern individualistic consciousness is revealed. The article implies that “Between the Desert and Life” and “The Last Temptation of Christ” are not alternatives to the Bible, but are reflections of the modern human soul, searching for its new spiritual dimensions.
