Summary/Abstract: The absence of a state budget and mechanisms to maintain education during the Bulgarian Revival era transformed the Bulgarian bourgeoisie's accumulated political and economic power into a significant factor in educational endeavors. In 1855, Mihail Kifalov, a Bulgarian emigrant living in Bucharest, wrote a will to support educational initiatives in Bulgaria. He joined his compatriots in the Danube Principalities capital to promote this initiative. The idea to establish an organization to take over the management of donations from patriotic Bulgarians was born in the circles of the Bulgarian Charitable Society. This article analyses the genesis of the idea and the initial activities of the Board of Trustees that was created for this purpose.
