Summary/Abstract: In the Balkans, the use of sustainable materials and renewable energy sources varies, but it is generally increasing compared to previous years. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the energy sector in 2022 still relied heavily on fossil fuels, particularly coal, which accounted for about 67% of the total electricity production, while hydroenergy accounted for 31%. In 2023, there was an increase in hydroenergy to 42%, which represents significant progress. The use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy, is still in its early stages of development, but there is great potential for their growth, especially in Herzegovina and mountainous areas. Initiatives to increase the use of renewable energy sources face numerous obstacles, including complex administrative procedures, lack of political support, and insufficient public awareness. In the Balkan region, fossil fuels still dominate, but more investment is being made in the development of renewable sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, improve the sustainability of the energy sector, and protect the environment. Recycling and the use of sustainable materials are also on the rise, but they have not yet reached the desired level.
