CONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES IN DEDEAĞAÇ PORT AFTER THE OTTOMAN-RUSSIAN WAR OF 1877-1878

Summary/Abstract: Due to its proximity to Edirne, Dedeağaç was a part of the Edirne Vilayet throughout Ottoman history. Although Dedeağaç was part of an important provincial-like Edirne Province, it did not come to the fore until the end of the 19th century. It can be said that Dedeağaç appeared as a small town until the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878. At the end of the mentioned war, a great transformation began inDedeağaç, which became one of the strategic regions for the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire, which was undergoing a new restructuring in the Balkans, decided to expand the existing port in Dedeağaç, and the railway line extended to the coastline accelerated this development. Thanks to this port, the fate of the region changed, and the transportation network expanded, and changes occurred in the maritime trade and demographic structure of Dedeağaç. This situation paved the way for new construction activities in the mentioned port, and Dedeağaç, which appeared as a small fishing town, turned into an important trade center. However, with the expansion of the port, new problems have emerged in the Dedeağaç port, which spreads over a wide area. Problems such as insufficient financial resources, who will do this work and how, have caused the work to drag on for years.
