Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes the motif of pain in Nicolae Dabija's novel „Tema pentru acasă” and its German translation „Die Hausaufgabe”. It highlights how the portrayal of pain intertwines with personal and collective histories, reflecting the traumatic experiences of the Bessarabian population under totalitarian regimes. The study emphasizes the role of the translator as a cultural mediator, navigating the challenges of conveying culturally specific elements across these languages. Furthermore, it explores the reception of the novel in the German-speaking context, where interpretations may abstract the historical and metaphysical dimensions of suffering. Ultimately, the paper underscores the ongoing relevance of historical trauma in shaping national identities and the complexities involved in literary translation.
