Soviet Control over the Spread of Ukrainian Culture in the World in the 1920s as a Tool of War against Ukrainian Identity

Summary/Abstract: Th e article analyses the forms of representation of Ukrainian culture in foreigncountries in the 1920s. A barrier to the entry of Ukrainian culture into the world art marketwas Soviet control, the aim of which was to eliminate the national features of Ukrainian cul-ture to erode it in the new values of the totalitarian state. Th e main tools of this control wereregulating the contacts of Ukrainian artists with foreign countries, combining the promotionof Ukrainian culture with the promotion of Russian culture, and supervising Soviet diplomaticmissions over the departures of Ukrainian cultural fi gures. Th is is how the hidden war againstthe Ukrainian identity was fought, which in the early 1930s took the form of open terroragainst the Ukrainian intelligentsia.
