Summary/Abstract: Th is article aims to shed light on the lesser-known international activities ofArchibald C. Coolidge. He was a historian and a professor at Harvard University, known forhis pioneering research on the history of Russia in the USA. He was also a member of Th eInquiry and Th e Council on Foreign Relations, and served as the longtime editor of ForeignAff airs. Th is article focuses on his two missions on behalf of the State Department: one togather information about Russia (April–October 1918) and the other about the former Austro--Hungarian monarchy (December 1918 – May 1919). Th rough an analysis of the objectives,conduct, and results of these missions, the text presents an American cognitive perspec-tive on the region. Th e research is based on printed American documents, letters, memoirs,and notes.
