Convergence of the Islamic World on the Basis of “Proximity”

Summary/Abstract: Islam is a social religion, and the system of human existence requires that man live in a group. Nevertheless, in addition to the necessity of social life, the convergence of societies is also an undeniable need of the Islamic world. The authors of the article, assuming that the essence of the relationship between Muslims is very similar to that of the era of the Prophet, and instead of tribal identity, their political and social life is formed by numerous national identities, try to shape a way to re-achieve a unique Islamic Ummah through the mechanism of social rapprochement and “closeness” (ulfet). This paper, using an analytical-descriptive research method (among other things, analysis of meaning), organizes the role of “closeness” in the convergence of the Islamic world and concludes that: first, the special position of “closeness” in the network of meanings formed by the words “love” (muhabbet and muveddet), “brotherhood” (uhuvvet) and “community” (ummah) indicates that there is a relationship of synonymy between closeness and convergence; and secondly, considering the semantic meanings and applications of this word, the convergence referred to in the Qur’an is based on similarity and identity on the one hand, and on the social division of labor on the other hand. The root of closeness comes from love, and love is a necessary stimulus for the elimination of mutual needs, and then for differentiation and social division of labor. Based on this, if closeness is taken as the basis of action (social or political) by emphasizing similarities, expanding relationships, strengthening positive thinking, eliminating mutual needs and strengthening feelings of empathy, the basis for convergence in the Islamic world will be strengthened.
