Surtitling Theatre Festivals: The Past, the Present, the Future

Summary/Abstract: Although interlingual surtitling is the most widely used form of conveying theatrical performances to foreign or international audiences, the production of theatrical surtitles is still marginal to scholarly interest in the context of thought about theatrical or translated communication. The existing works in the field of theatrical translation focus primarily on the literary translation of dramatic texts, while stage translation and direct interlingual surtitling of theatrical performances remain an understudied topic. This study therefore focuses on this specific area and does so particularly in the context of theatre festivals. Through findings from qualitative research interviews with surtitlers and coordinators of interlingual surtitling at theatre festivals in Slovakia, it offers a probe into the development of existing strategies in interlingual surtitling, identifies the competence and qualification profiles of surtitlers, their working conditions, and the problems faced by the models they apply in their work. It concludes with an assessment of the crucial challenges of domestic practices and reflects on strategies that may lead to greater professionalisation in this field and improve the quality of interlingual surtitling in Slovak theatre.
