Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the interpretation of the sculpture La Nona Ora by the contemporary Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan in the context of eschatology. By drawing a parallel between the Book of the prophet Daniel and Newton’s identifi cation of the Roman Pontiff as the eleventh beast from the Revelation of John, we see the Pope, as the subject of Cattelon’s work, affected by an extraterrestrial entity (meteor), that is, divine judgment. John Paul II, like Emperor Nahuhodonsor, was shot in the legs and fell to the ground. This indicates the predestination of history, as well as the imperfection of earthly government, even when it assumes spiritual prerogatives.
