Summary/Abstract: This paper attempts to explain the shift in focus and the remaking of Slovak national hero Juraj Jánošík from a leading literary figure and metaphor of the Romantics in the 19th-century poem ‘The Death of Jánošík’ by Jan Botto to his desemantized remains in the absurdist play ‘Jánošík’ by Stanislav Štěpka in the 20th century. The study offers numerous examples of the different interpretations of the image, proving the complexity and the special place that Jánošík has occupied in the cultural memory of Slovakia over the past three centuries.
